Argan Oil: Gift of the Berbers + A Recipe for You!

argan-oil-gift-of-the-berbers-1-300x362Argan oil has been one of the trendiest, most buzzed about natural skincare ingredients over the past few years. Once just a treasure reserved for the Berber women of Morocco, it’s now found in just about every hair, skin, and nail product on the market. I had already written about argan oil in the past on Holistically Haute and Blogcritics.org, but when the international magazine Complete Wellbeing asked me to write about some other aspects of argan oil for their print publication last year I said yes, since there’s always more to learn about a favorite ingredient! I just received word last month that the article is now available on their website, so I wanted to share it with you.

Here’s a little argan oil secret for you:

Argan oil is the carrier oil in my most prized serum–lovingly called “My Precious” serum (I throw in a Lord of the Rings reference wherever I can ;)–it’s very expensive for me to make since I don’t dilute the argan at all–the serum is pure argan oil with several drops of my favorite essential oils?for extra skin benefits (and an amazing aroma). Argan is great for its anti-aging, antioxidant, healing, softening, and soothing properties.

Argan oil-based serum recipe:

argan_oilYou can make your own argan oil-based serum yourself–it’s available for a very good price (much less than you’ll find it for on the shelves) at Mountain Rose Herbs. Some of my favorite essential oils to add to argan oil are lavender, rose, melissa, frankincense, melaleuca, and geranium (among others). Have fun and experiment with making your own blend!

You will need:

  • A 1 or 2 oz amber or cobalt glass bottle with dropper (I prefer cobalt because it keeps light out better)
  • Organic argan oil
  • Your choice of essential oils (see above for suggestions)

Instructions:

  1. Fill your bottle about 3/4 way to the top with argan oil.
  2. Add a few drops of each essential oil to the bottle (no more than 50 drops total for a 2 oz bottle). Tip: make sure you write down how many drops you use of each oil and what order you add them so you have it for next time!

    1. Hi Rachel, I assume this is a serum you leave on after cleansing? No issues with putting near eyes?
      Very interested…sounds great!

      1. Hi Susan, great question! Correct–you would apply this after cleansing and leave it on. No issues with putting near eyes 🙂 –Rachael

      2. Susan, and you’ll also need to be careful how much essential oil you use, as well as which ones. Some are not suitable for use on the body, let alone the face or eye area. As aromatherapists we train for a whole year to be able to select specifics.
