Skin Hangover Rescue DIY Skin Detox Face Mask Recipe

Skin Hangover Rescue: DIY Detox Mask Recipe

It’s easy to overdo it with indulgences over the holidays, at parties, or when on vacation. Common celebratory foods like sugary desserts, salty hams, greasy fried chicken, and too many alcoholic beverages can leave you with a nasty skin hangover.

You know how a “regular” hangover leaves your body feeling exhausted, dehydrated, sluggish, and bloated? Symptoms of a skin hangover are similar–dehydration, puffiness, dull tone, extra fine lines and wrinkles, and sluggish texture are common. Other visible skin hangover symptoms also include redness and “broken” (dilated) capillaries, hyperpigmentation, acne breakouts, rosacea or eczema flare-ups, and congested pores.

I recently had the opportunity to talk about how to revive hungover skin live on Good Morning CT at Nine, with anchor (and former Miss Connecticut) Alyssa Rae Taglia.

As I mentioned in the segment, rescuing post-celebratory hungover skin is both an inside and outside job.

On the inside, here are some ways you can help your skin recover:

  • Start your day with a cup of warm lemon water and a green smoothie
  • Drink lots of herbal teas with detoxifying, liver-supporting herbs like milk thistle, dandelion root, licorice root, and ginger
  • Add a serving of fermented foods like kefir, raw sauerkraut, or kombucha to your diet
  • Drink lots of water! In my book, Love Your Skin, Love Yourself, I recommend one half your body weight in ounces (meaning if you weigh 150 lbs, then drink 75 ounces per day)

And here are some topical skin hangover rescue tips:

  • Make sure you nourish, hydrate, and protect your skin on the outside with plant-based skincare that’s the proper balance of humectants and emollients
  • Practice gentle skin massage techniques like acupressure and gua sha
  • Try a detoxifying herbal clay mask once or twice a week.

DIY Skin Detox Face Mask recipe from the show:

DIY Skin Detox Face Mask ingredients: powdered matcha, licorice root, calendula, rose hips, goat's milk, and rhassoul clay

Equal parts of powdered:

  • Rose hips (great source of Vitamin C)
  • Licorice root (super hydrating because of its demulcent properties),
  • Calendula (soothing, anti-inflammatory, supports collagen and elastin production)
  • Goat’s milk (hydrating, soothing, gently exfoliating)
  • Matcha (anti-inflammatory, skin brightening, detoxifying, antioxidant)
  • Rhassoul clay (you can use any clay of your choice here to help detox and purify the pores, gently exfoliate, and refine the skin)

Reconstitute with your choice of:

Rose hydrosol, aloe gel, jojoba oil
  • Hydrosol (I used rose for its gentle astringent and aromatic properties on the show)
  • Raw honey
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Distilled water
  • Carrier oil of your choice (I like jojoba or hemp seed oil for this)

Mix them together to form a paste. Apply to cleansed, toned skin. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Moisten with a soft, wet, warm cloth as a compress before gently removing with the cloth and warm water. Tone and moisturize when you’re done! Use this after a skin hangover, or once to twice a week to promote smooth, nourished, purified skin.

You can make your powdered herbs, milk, and clay blend and store it in its dry form for up to a year in a dark glass jar, away from heat and light. I recommend only reconstituting enough for a single treatment at a time, because once you add water or a water-based liquid to it, it could grow microbes.

Where to buy your herbal skincare ingredients

Create Your Skincare

My favorite places to get my herbs, clays, oils, and other botanical skincare ingredients is Mountain Rose Herbs. They were one of my amazing sponsors for the Herbal Skincare Summit (which you can get here), have recognized my Create Your Skincare online courses as quality herbal education on their website, AND they offer Create Your Skincare students an exclusive student discount. I also love and recommend Herbiary and Formulator Sample Shop.
