One of the most important ways to turn a plain, naked DIY skincare product into a luxurious skincare gift is to add accessories that are both beautiful and usable.
I, along with my fellow co-founders of the Nutritional Aesthetics? Alliance, had the pleasure of attending the International Congress of Esthetics and Spa conference in Philadelphia recently. I love attending that show, not just to learn about new developments in ingredients and scientific skin research, but also because Les Nouvelles Esthetiques and Dermascope Magazine–the journals that put this show on–do such a great job of reintroducing tried-and-true natural and ancient remedies back into mainstream aesthetics. Last year I learned about ancient Chinese method, gua sha, and this year I had the pleasure of learning about the ancient Ayurvedic tool, the Kansa wand.
Learn more about the Kansa wand technique and its benefits here:
Melanie Sachs, of Diamond Way Ayurveda, did a wonderful lecture and demonstration of a facial utilizing the Kansa wand–but what I loved was that she also talked about ways to use the wand at home, in your daily life, which is why the Kansa wand has quickly become my favorite new accessory to include in a DIY skincare gift.
Why the Kansa wand makes an ideal companion for DIY skincare:
Some of the most common DIY skincare gifts are facial oils, balms, salves, body butters, and massage oils. The experience of applying all of these products, whether you’re using them for massage or not, can all be?transformed into a healing self-care ritual by adding a Kansa wand.
Here are some ideas:
- Use the Kansa wand on the face after applying your morning and evening facial oils
- Use it (or have your partner use it) on top of a salve or massage oil if you’ve got a sore back, neck, or joints.
- Use it on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet for a gentle at-home reflexology treatment. This is also extremely pleasurable and relaxing for children–I used it on my younger daughter (8 years old) before bed last night and her exact words were “This feels like LIFE! It just feels like LIFE!” And she slept extremely well.
- Keep it at your desk with a facial oil, and apply both to the temples and “third eye” area of the forehead several times throughout the day to help with screen fatigue, stress management, and to promote?a relaxed focus (this is my favorite use).
Where to get Kansa wands
Diamond Way Ayurveda* sells Kansa wands which?they verify are made authentically?with the rosewood handle and the correct balance of copper and tin forming the bronze. They are also available from other online sources such as Ebay and Amazon*–but it’s important to be able to verify the authenticity of the metal, as that’s the main reason Kansa wands offer benefits. If you don’t want to shop online, you might find them at stores that sell other Eastern healing tools–but again, you’ll want to be sure the materials are authentic.

Could you tell me who trains in this therapy in the uk please.
Hi Sandra, I don’t know of anyone specifically in the UK as I am in the US. However, since this is an Ayurvedic therapy, it’s likely that any Ayurvedic spa educators in the UK would offer such training.
Hi Sandra. You can try Hayley, whom I’ve just purchased a wand from. Her contact details are:

Hi Barb, thanks for reading! I got mine from Robert and Melanie Sachs, and it is authentic–made from rosewood and bronze.
I love my Kanza Wand! I use on every client during g a facial – it is extremely relaxing, never mind the benefits to the skin! Thanks for the idea Rachael of adding it to a gift basket!
You’re welcome! Yes, it is one of my favorite skincare things! I always fall asleep during a kansa wand facial 🙂
I am looking to purchase a authentic Kansa Wand. Any information on where to purchase ie. websites would be appreciated
Hi Regina. I got mine–which is authentic–from Melanie and Robert Sachs. You can get it at their website http://www.diamondwayayurveda.com.
Does kansa have same effects as gua sha?
Hi Tammy, that is a great question! Personally I think the effects of the kansa wand are similar to the effects of gua sha. I do think the kansa wand is a little more subtle than gua sha, and also the copper has a different energetic effect on the body than the jade does in gua sha. Both are excellent though, and I use both! Thanks for reading! –Rachael
I got myself one and love the weird metallic smell of the bronze. It feels really meditative/relaxing while doing this to myself.
I love the metallic smell too! There’s something magical about the whole experience. I sleep so deeply when I get a Kansa wand treatment during a facial!
