“When it rains, it pours.”–Twist on an old English proverb
“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”–Murphy’s Law
“Like attracts like.”–Universal Law of Attraction
Do these sound familiar?
I’m sure you’ve heard–and used–at least one of these before. And even though the words are different, and the meanings can be used in different scenarios, they do share a common interpretation: you attract and/or magnify what you focus on.
Think about?a day when you’ve over-scheduled yourself and are feeling a bit frantic and like you’re surrounded by chaos. You might then be on your way to pick up your kids from school or to an important meeting with a client and get stuck in a nasty traffic jam. On the flip side, on days when you’ve managed your time well, you seem to find yourself sailing through green lights and wind up having extra time on your hands. Have you ever noticed that?
These principles apply to acne and other skin disorders too.
You probably already know that stress is one of the leading triggers?of acne–and that certain people and situations seem to cause more stress than others, right? So imagine you get into a big disagreement with your boss, and then?complain about it to other co-workers and your spouse, and your friends, and you find that at the end of the day you’re even more stressed than you were right after the disagreement.
The next morning, you wake up with a big zit–and then every time you see your boss over the next several days, you’re taken right back to the same level of stress as you had at the end of the day on the day of the disagreement.
How and why did that happen? Our society is funny–some families naturally hold in negative emotions and don’t express them at all,?while others blab about anything and everything to everyone in the family–whether it’s a complaint about a person, an event, a chronic illness, you name it. These tendencies might seem completely opposite, but the truth is that they share one common thread–they’re still holding the negative, chaotic energy and causing it to build and grow, whether it’s internally and privately (in which case it will either come out in a big burst usually at an inopportune time or manifest as a physical disorder); or outwardly (in which case everyone who had the misfortune to have to listen to the complaining now carries the burden of that negative energy). That magnified negative energy remains, and it’s likely that the next time you see your boss, that increased negative energy will trigger even more stressful of a response within you.
Remember one of the most important laws of physics–energy can neither?be created?nor destroyed–it can only be transformed. While we can’t make negative energy go away, we can take actions to transform it into positive energy–but that won’t happen if we continue with negative thought patterns. The only way is to break that cycle, and choose more peaceful and positive thought patterns.
How else does this apply to acne?
Acne–whether it’s an isolated breakout or a chronic condition–is always triggered by something. If you freak out when you look in the mirror and see a breakout before an important event, or think negative thoughts about yourself because you have chronic acne, guess what will happen? The negative thoughts will build and as a result, the acne will get worse. It’s inevitable.

This also applies for rosacea. Many people who live with rosacea get flare-ups in social situations. While some triggers are food and drink-related (red wine, for instance)–stress certainly is a trigger–and if you’re someone who gets stressed out by social situations, it’s likely that you’ll have a flare-up at every social situation you attend. The stressful energy might start the moment you get an invitation to an event (especially if you know someone you don’t get along with will be there), and escalate every time you see the invitation or see it on your calendar, and grow even more as you pick out your outfit and get in the car to go to the event. By the time you get there, that ball of negative energy is so strong that a flare-up is–you guessed it–inevitable.
So what can you do about it?
I know of two good ways to break this cycle–let it go, or let it be. You can either transform the energy into positive energy, or let it dissipate as neutral energy.
Metaphysical science teaches that in order to attract positive energy and therefore, positive circumstances into one’s life; one must learn to train the mind to react as positively to negative influences as it does to positive influences. This can be achieved through spiritual mind treatments,?affirmations, meditation, and other similar practices. It can be difficult, but it can be done, and usually sooner than one would expect.
The second way–dissipating the energy as neutral energy–is also achieved by these spiritual mind practices, but instead of focusing on reacting to negative influences in a positive manner, we’re?encouraged to react neutrally and mindfully; and put distance between ourselves, our thoughts, and the situation. This is achieved by observing what thoughts come up–positive or negative–and either letting them go or letting them simply be. If we’re able to objectively observe–without assigning stigmas or labels to thoughts and scenarios–and recognize the thoughts as the separate energy patterns they are rather than an extension of who we are and what we’re worth, that causes negative energies to neutralize and transform into something else without need for attachment.
So if you’re someone who has acne, rosacea, or another skin condition and you’re used to thinking of yourself negatively because of it; I want you to catch those thoughts as soon as they enter your mind and put a freeze on them.
And then understand two things:
1. Those negative thoughts have nothing to do with who you are as a person or what you’re meant to accomplish with your time on this planet
2. You are not your skin condition and your skin condition is not you. It doesn’t place a value on you, or determine whether you’ll have a good day or a bad day. The only person who can do that is you–the real you who lives at the core of your being. Not the society conditioned you–the you beyond that.
Once you’ve done that, look at yourself with new eyes–kind, loving, and compassionate eyes–and go about your day. Keep practicing this, and enjoy the positive changes that come both on the surface of your skin, and how you approach different scenarios in life.

Hi Rachael,
You are truly correct. Whatever problem that we have, acne or no acne, we should always let it go and let it be. There are a lot of things that we cannot control, but we can control our emotions, our thoughts, our lives. Severe and chronic acne problems often lead to depression. But I am a firm believer that self-love and overwhelming support from family and friends will help us raise above our circumstances. Thanks for sharing!
Jenny, thank you so much for reading and for taking the time to comment and share your truth! –Rachael
Hi Rachael, thanks for the reply! Every time I see an article like yours, it makes me so happy that somebody else it speaking up for us, for acne sufferers. I’ve battled with acne for a long time, and it was a horrid experience. But knowing that we are not alone and that we are loved, in spite of it all, makes a lot of difference. To add, people should consider acne problem as a serious issue. Those who haven’t been in our situation thinks that we’re just so vain and superficial. Thanks for taking the time! 🙂
Thanks so much Jenny!
Yes! Skin can be treated with “spiritual mind treatments” as you said! I am so glad that people are finally talking about this. I have been using affirmations in the morning and am amazed by the results. Here is a good one to try: “I have beautiful, glowing, healthy, radiant skin!”
Thank you so much for reading and sharing, Cindy!
Hey Rachael,
Such an encouraging words. Luckily I don’t have acne, and for those who are suffering don’t let acne be the reason for you to give up. Always think positive because life is a matter to be enjoyed. Just keep going because positive thoughts lead to positive life.
So true! Thanks for sharing, Wendy!
